Changing health plans after you enroll

Whether you can change a health insurance plan after you’re enrolled depends on the time of year you want to change.

Until January 31, 2017: Change plans any time

The Open Enrollment Period for 2017 insurance is November 1, 2016 to January 31, 2017. Log into your HealthCare.gov account, update your application if necessary, select a different plan, and complete your enrollment.

Note: If you change insurance plans at any time, your old plan is automatically cancelled when you enroll in the new one.

After January 31, 2017: Change plans only if you qualify for a Special Enrollment Period

You can change coverage outside the annual Open Enrollment period only if you have a qualifying life event that gives you a Special Enrollment Period. You usually have 60 days from the life event to enroll in a new plan.

Cancelling your plan without replacing it

You can cancel a Marketplace plan without replacing it at any time. But there are important things to consider before you do this.
